Review My Korean Drama: 'Celebrity'

Netflix has just released an original series entitled "Celebrity" which explores the deceptive world of influencers. This drama has 12 episodes which were immediately released on June 30 2023.

"Celebrity" stars Park Gyu Young and Kang Min Hyuk as the main characters. Apart from that, there are also Lee Dong Gun and Lee Chung Ah, as well as a series of fresh new faces with quite impressive acting skills.

As the title suggests, "Celebrity" tells the lives of celebrities or more precisely influencers, whose popularity is no less than actors/actresses and K-Pop idols in South Korea.

The main character in this drama directed by Kim Cheol Kyu is Seo A Ri (Park Gyu Young), a cosmetics SPG who initially didn't know anything about the glittering world of influencers, until she became a celebrity with 1.3 million followers.

A Ri's desire to become one of them was triggered by her meeting with Oh Min Hye (Jung Hyo Sung), a high school friend who is now successful as an influencer with more than 390 thousand followers.

This drama has a back and forth plot from Seo A Ri's Instagram live broadcast, who is believed to have died in the present. A Ri tells what happened to her and at the same time reveals the deceitful world of influencers in sequential flashbacks.

Celebrity" could be said to be a one-woman-show considering Park Gyu Young's acting as Seo A Ri who is too powerful, aka too strong and charismatic. With the help of a mysterious anonymous account, A Ri was able to make the Gabin Society, a popular celebrity gang, nervous and confused.

The Gabin Society contains problematic influencers, and Oh Min Hye is one of them. Apart from that, there is the tantrum chaebol boy Jin Chae Hee (Han Jae In) and his two ladies-in-waiting, Angela (Han Eu Ddum) and Jina (Kim Si Hyun).

Born rich, Jin Chae Hee can only get angry all the time, especially if things don't happen according to her wishes. However, Chae Hee managed to escape the problems she created thanks to her older brother, Jin Tae Jeon (Lee Dong Gun), owner of the famous Taegang law firm.

While Gabin Society is jealous of Seo A Ri's achievements, there is a fairy godmother figure who secretly supports A Ri at every opportunity. Yoon Si Hyun (Lee Chung Ah), Jin Tae Jeon's wife, successfully amazes us with her beauty and kindness.

Often hanging out with the fake Gabin Society, Yoon Si Hyun immediately falls in love with Seo A Ri, who is anti-fake. That doesn't mean that Si Hyun is perfect, because he was annoyed when his ex-girlfriend, Han Jun Kyung (Kang Min Hyuk), openly had a crush on A Ri.

Han Jun Kyung is actually the typical rich and handsome CEO that we often see in K-Dramas. However, what makes Jun Kyung different is his relationship with Seo A Ri, which can be said to be a bit far from cliche, even though there are several cliche scenes.

Seo A Ri and Han Jun Kyung's first meeting was very memorable. Instead of being a supporter and doing anything to make his crush successful, Jun Kyung just watches A Ri from a distance, while reassuring her feelings.

Kang Min Hyuk successfully conveyed Han Jun Kyung's feelings for Seo A Ri, from crushing to full-blown gossip. The chemistry with Park Gyu Young is also amazing. There is no need for excessive skinship to make us feel confused.

Overall, "Celebrity" successfully presents the glittering world of influencers which is full of intrigue and fakeness. The mystery element in the story is also strong enough to make us feel at home watching while guessing what actually happens in Seo A Ri's life next.

Plot twist? Enough to make us go, "Huh? What?" The ending is also very satisfying and fair for everyone.

Because the story is not far from the world of entertainment, "Celebrity" also presents a series of unexpected cameos, starting from Seol In Ah, Jung Eugene, Lee Sang Yoon to Lee Junho.

"Celebrity" rating according to My Korean Drama admin: 9/10 (one less because there aren't many intimate scenes with Seo A Ri and Han Jun Kyung 😂)
